Apps For Goods: Impacting communities through technology

(Spanish below)

One of the main objectives that remains throughout all our programs and initiatives is to empower young people, giving them the tools they need to foster their own skills and have a positive impact on their communities and surroundings. Apps For Good is not the exception; with this program we offer students technological tools and encourage them to use them for the greater good.

It’s only our second year working with the program, but we have already managed to double the impact. Working with the Colegio de Santa Ana, a public school which has collaborated with us in other projects like Duolingo en Acción; this year we’re working with twice the amount of students and hope to continue growing the number of participants each year.

In this second edition of Apps For Good we continue working collaboratively with Fundación Paniamor and TIGO at Colegio de Santa Ana, where 35 students are being encouraged and motivated to use technology to improve their communities.

We began working on July 31st, and for 12 weeks the students will learn to identify social or environmental problems in their communities; and using technology, they will develop an application prototype to help solve these problems and impact their environment.

Andrea Maradiaga, Program Coordinator at Ideas en Acción and Catalina Gómez, Consultant at Fundación Paniamor, are in charge of facilitating the program and accompanying the students in their learning and ideation process.

The program would not be possible without the commitment of the school principal, Carlos Esquivel, and the English teacher Carlos Carballo, who have made it possible for us to reach more students this year.

“This program has had a positive impact on the school. It’s a program that allows the student to not only open a book and read or solve a problem or fill in the blanks, but a program where the student is really invested in helping his or her community which creates awareness and helps the student understand that these social problems may have a solution; and most importantly, a solution where the student is the main change agent, providing new and important ideas.” Carlos Carballo, English teacher.

At the end of the program we expect to have 9 prototypes, and most importantly we hope to encourage the students to continue working for their communities with creative, innovative and technological ideas, collaborating and generating a long lasting positive impact.

Apps For Good: impactando comunidades a través de las tecnologías
