Challenge

The lack of diversity in international affairs adversely impacts the ability of the United States to maintain its leadership role and competitive edge in the architecture of international affairs and business. Diversity of perspectives and voices not only enrich but also improve crucial foreign policy and business decisions. Minority professionals benefit career-wise, but the U.S. benefits as more reasoned, debated foreign policy decisions are made when diverse voices are included.

Solution

ICAP brings together promising minority mid-career professionals and provides leadership and skills training, as well as a network that over time, has come to extend to all levels of the U.S. policy landscape. Continuing to educate new minority leaders and also provide training on penetrating the "glass ceiling" and finding a way to add their voices to the policy dialogue is what ICAP accomplishes through the seminar, and also the network and ongoing events to bring together ICAP professionals.

Long-Term Impact

Leveraging the full diversity and talents of all Americans helps the United States to be more effective, innovative, and globally competitive. ICAP helps to advance this objective by elevating diverse candidates, and expanding the access pipeline by engaging and mentoring young scholars from underprivileged backgrounds through the Global Access Pipeline-a project that provides a "pipeline" for underrepresented groups to achieve leadership positions in international affairs.
