Making learning possible in Al Aqaba Village

By Kareem Nasrallah and Maria Syed | Staff Writer and Director of Development

The joy of a book
The joy of a book

Your ongoing support continues to enable the Ibn Rushd Library in Al-Aqaba Village to remain a safe learning space for children. In a place marked by uncertainty, the library offers more than access to books—it provides a safe environment where children can learn, interact, and find moments of stability.

The library is operating under significant constraints. The security situation in Al-Aqaba Village has worsened, with increased risks affecting children’s mobility, limiting participation in activities. This has led to partial or complete suspension of activities during certain periods.

In recent months, settlers have encroached on Al Aqaba’s privately owned land, creating a very dangerous situation. Several settler outposts have been set up and taken down multiple times. Villagers have been reporting each one to the Israeli police. Sadly, on April 8, a young man from Tayasir was also killed.

January recorded stronger attendance, with around 70 children regularly visiting the library. This number declined to approximately 45 children during February and March, reflecting the impact of worsening security conditions and restricted movement. The exam period in January also contributed to a temporary decrease in participation.

Despite these challenges, the library remains an essential learning hub. The library focused primarily on storytelling and interactive activities–designed to support children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development.

  • Story discussions, such as A Very Tiny Family, helped reinforce positive family values through dialogue and group activities.
  • Cultural awareness was promoted through stories like Al-Bassa Fisherman, connecting children to Palestinian heritage and traditions.
  • Imagination and creativity were encouraged through outdoor sessions, where children engaged in open-ended storytelling and play.
  • Young boys and girls took part actively in focused sessions.
  • Psychosocial well-being was supported through activities like guided breathing exercises, which gave children simple tools to cope with stress.
  • Community-building activities, including a Ramadan group Iftar for girls, strengthened social bonds and participation.

Looking ahead, our priorities include updating the library’s collection—especially with books for young boys and girls—and restocking stationery to keep interactive programs going. We also need to explore other ways to deliver books, like remote loan activities, so children can keep learning even when access is limited.

Your ongoing support is critical to sustaining the Ibn Rushd Library. It enables the library to continue offering children not only learning opportunities, but also a sense of normalcy and strength in a difficult environment.

Thanks for all that you do.
