Introduction

Joy Foundation Pakistan, a non-profit organization committed to uplifting underprivileged communities, undertook a vital initiative focusing on the health, hygiene, and dignity of adolescent girls. This report outlines the successful implementation of the Hygiene Kits Distribution and Construction of Toilets for Girls project in targeted rural and semi-urban areas.

 

Project Objectives

The primary objectives of the project were:

  • To improve menstrual hygiene management (MHM) among school-going girls.
  • To promote awareness around personal hygiene and reproductive health.
  • To reduce absenteeism of girls from school during menstruation.
  • To provide safe, private, and clean sanitation facilities for girls in schools.

Project Activities

3.1 Hygiene Kits Distribution

Target Areas: District Toba Tek Singh and Surrounding areas

Beneficiaries: 500 school-going girls (Ages 10–18)

Distribution Process:
Kits were distributed across 10 villages in coordination with village group teams. Orientation sessions were held before distribution to ensure proper understanding and use of hygiene materials.

Awareness Sessions

Topics Covered:

  • Menstrual hygiene and health
  • Importance of personal cleanliness
  • Methodology: Interactive workshops, role plays, Q&A sessions, and IEC materials in local languages

Construction of Toilets for Girls

Number of Toilets Constructed: 3 new girl-friendly toilets

Features:

Proper ventilation

Running water and handwashing stations

Dustbins with lids for disposal

Doors with internal locks for privacy

Community Involvement:

Local masons and school management committees were involved to ensure sustainability and ownership of facilities.

Impact

Reduced absenteeism: Schools reported a 30–40% drop in absenteeism during menstruation.

Improved awareness: 90% of girls reported better understanding and confidence in managing their periods.

Enhanced privacy & dignity: The newly built toilets provided girls with a safe and secure environment, encouraging higher school attendance and participation.
