This Project will assist the people of Fond des Blancs,Haiti to secure roofs to their homes. We propose to accomplish this by conducting an existing building and construction practice survey and based upon this survey, devise a simple method and supply the necessary hardware to train the community on how to secure 50 roofs.
From our surveys post Hurricane Matthew, it became clear that adequate notice about the impending hurricane was not available to residents. They lacked information on the severity, track and importance of preparation. Many community members let us know that even if they had had adequate warning, they did not have the resources to store food and water in preparation. Many also explained that they didn't have the resources to secure roofs and/or fix them post-hurricane.
1. Develop simple design for tying down roofs in the Fond des Blancs region, based on local housing construction methods. 2. Educate community members in Fond des Blancs, especially carpenters and home owners about the importance of properly securing roofs to walls to prepare for hurricanes. 3. Train community members in Fond des Blancs, especially carpenters and home owners to install hurricane ties to homes throughout the region. 4. Follow up with a series of inspections of homes.
Residents in the community will have secure roofs as they face hurricane seasons to come. Residents who have secure are less vulnerable to storms and weather in the coming years and will experience fewer life disruptions as storms increase in severity and intensity. Residents in the community will be trained on how to secure roofs and the importance of securing roofs. This project can be replicated by the community as it prepares for future storms.
