Oscar was downgraded from a tropical storm on Tuesday, after making landfall in Cuba as a category 1 hurricane. The storm narrowly missed Haiti, but at Health Equity International / St. Boniface Hospital (HEI/SBH), we will remain vigilant and watchful through the end of hurricane season on November 30. Stocking up on materials and supplies in our warehouse remains a critical priority, especially as armed gangs control the main roads and supply routes from Port-au-Prince.
HEI/SBH has 40+ years’ experience working through natural disasters, epidemics, and political instability, and has a strong track record in leading effective emergency response efforts in southern Haiti. Just last month, when a fuel tanker exploded in the nearby city of Miragoâne, SBH staff mounted an immediate response. Our team received and stabilized 24 severely injured patients, most with burns covering 50% of their bodies. We coordinated closely with Haiti’s Ministry of Health to safely transfer identified patients to a specialized burn center.
