Hurricane Michael Response - Disaster Health Kits

Summary

Hurricane Michael made landfall Wednesday, Oct 10 as a powerful Category 4 hurricane with 150+ mph winds. More than 6000 residents were forced to evacuate their homes and are now residing in shelters and other locations. This project will provide thousands of MAP Disaster Health Kits (DHKs) to hurricane evacuees in the Florida Panhandle. DHKs include essential hygiene items and health supplies to help prevent the spread of illness. One kit helps a person living in a shelter for a week.

Challenge

Thousands have been displaced from their homes throughout the Florida Panhandle following the devastation of Hurricane Michael. Flooding puts children, the elderly and disabled at increased risk for health issues. Many already have compromised immune systems making them more susceptible to illness. Individuals exposed to flood waters are at risk for skin rashes, conjunctivitis, and ear and throat illnesses. Disaster Health Kits help prevent the spread of illness by providing vital health items.

Solution

MAP International is sending Disaster Health Kits to serve the people displaced by Hurricane Michael in the Florida Panhandle. These kits include antiseptic wipes, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, a washcloth and other essential health items that help prevent the spread of illness. Each kit is designed to help meet the needs of one person residing in a shelter or other location for approximately one week.

Long-Term Impact

Prolonged power and water outages cause unhealthy sanitary conditions and impact a person's ability to fight off illness. Providing Disaster Health Kits (DHK) to these individuals offers items that assist in the prevention of illness and disease. MAP International will send thousands of DHKs to be distributed throughout the Florida Panhandle and surrounding areas.
