Friends,

So, we have some great news... Thanks to the continued help from our supporters (like you!), we were able to raise enough money to purchase an ultrasound machine for our partners in Puerto Rico, CentroMAM.

MAM stands for 'Mujeres Ayudando Mujeres' or 'Women Helping Women' - and that's exactly what we're doing here. With this ultrasound machine, we can ensure that the women that COHI and CentroMAM treat have healthy, safe gestations with frequent informative updates. This means that we can improve outcomes for these mamas' pregnancies, and the resulting babies who we welcome into the world. For a national healthcare system that remains underfunded over a year since the hurricane originally hit, this makes all the difference.

So thank you, and.... let's get them another one!

Meet Vanessa, a changemaker in Puerto Rico

It is our pleasure to introduce you to Vanessa, the founder of COHI’s partner in Puerto Rico, CentroMAM. CentroMAM is an organization we are so proud to support, as they lead the way on the island toward positioning Puerto Rican women as leaders in the long recovery from Hurricane Maria.

Vanessa and CentroMAM have truly made lemonade out of lemons. Puerto Rico has one of the highest maternal and infant death rates in the US and one of the highest cesarean section rates. CentroMAM is leading the way on the island in changing the health care system by training Puerto Rican doulas to care for Puerto Rican families and by providing the island’s premiere birth center, where families have a choice and some control over the kind of care they receive.

But don’t take my word for it.  Want to know more about what our work looked like as we responded to Hurricane Maria? Watch the video and hear about our shared impact directly from Vanessa herself.

We are proud to stand with local partners like Centro MAM and so thankful that we can continue to support their recovery efforts. Their solar-powered birth center is now offering free reproductive health services and doula training! Check out the latest in this wonderful article from Bustle:

"Midwives & Doulas Were Critical Healthcare Providers After Hurricane Maria — And Are Still Filling A Gap Today."

They are also now training Promotoras de Salud, Health Promoters, for their mobile clinics. We are so grateful to be able to partner with Centro MAM.

Thanks to all of our donors for your continued support!

Best,

Leah

COHI is proud to be supporting Centro MAM and all their efforts to serve their community. Mobile clinics are up and running and more staff and volunteers will be at the center beginning in August.

The big push is happening now to have everything organized and prepared because hurricane season 2018 is here!

Centro MAM's role within the community remains the same:

~Promote and work towards birth justice

~Offer midwifery care based on sliding scale or free of charge

~Offer doula care based on sliding scale or free of charge

~Breastfeeding support and consulting

~Education of midwives, doulas, health-care professionals, and communities in relation to holistic health, prevention, and maternal-infant care

Thank you for your role in supporting the women and children of Puerto Rico.

COHI is super excited to be continuing our work in Puerto Rico through support of CentroMAM, a local and community-based organization of midwives and maternal health professionals on the island. CentroMam is doing so much to help rebuild their community and continue doing the work of supporting moms and babies in hard places.

We are in the beginning phases of helping them create a birth center sustainability plan in 2018! We hope to help them build a sustainable community center so that they have the skills and tools available to support women, babies, and their communities in the face of natural disasters.

We have committed funding to CentroMAM for the rest of the year. In addition, we are trying to procure in kind gifts and supplies to fulfill their wish of building a rain catchment system and solar panels on the new birth center.

COHI is also providing a volunteer to help with logistics, administration, and fundraising for their sustainability plan.

We have lots to do and we couldn’t do it without supporters like you, so thank you!

Best,

Leah
