Hurricane Relief in Honduras

By Ana Luisa Ahern | Executive Director

Restored Field in Honduras
Restored Field in Honduras

2020 was an incredibly rough year for Central America. In November, when two massive hurricanes tore through Honduras destroying thousands of homes and taking dozens of lives, a difficult year got even harder. Communities across Honduras lost their livelihoods, with over 70% of all crops destroyed and 1.8 million dollars in damage - and no government support on the horizon.

Red COMAL quickly mobilized to provide relief for Honduran communities. They prioritized providing families most affected by the storm access to food and basic necessities. Red COMAL staff, their families, and volunteers worked around the clock to package and deliver hundreds of emergency kits of food, medicine, masks, and disinfectants to people in rural communities. In many cases, these communities were inaccessible by vehicle and they delivered the supplies on foot.

As the immediate threat of danger subsided, Red COMAL worked hand-in-hand with communities to fight food insecurity and restart agricultural production. With your support, they provided farmers with seeds, fertilizer, hens, supplies, and training to build strong, sustainable farms. Red COMAL and small farmers have continued to work together, refilling community granaries, replanting fields, and restoring a sense of security for families who had lost everything.

As a result of Red COMAL’s rapid, targeted response and your generous support, food security and independence were restored to hundreds of families across Honduras. Thank you for being a champion for community-led work that reaches those who truly need it.
