Summary

In Honduras, Hurricane Eta left a trail of destruction. Thousands of acres of crops were washed away, causing even more shortages in communities already experiencing severe food insecurity as a result of the pandemic. And now, Hurricane Iota is following Eta's path and making matters devastatingly worse. Your support and solidarity are urgently needed to help equip our partners with emergency supplies so they can reach and assist families and small farmers whose homes and crops were destroyed.

Challenge

As of November 10th, 68 communities in Honduras remained isolated by collapsed bridges, impassable roads, flooding or landslides. 58 people are dead, 8 people are still missing, and over 1.8 million people were impacted by the storm. The communities served by Red COMAL lost 80% of their crops and hundreds of homes were destroyed. And now, Hurricane Iota has made landfall and is causing catastrophic damage to an already battered country. Crop losses are predicted to reach 100%.

Solution

Red COMAL's team is on the ground launching relief efforts to address the urgent needs of those most impacted by Hurricanes Eta and Iota. Their priority is to ensure access to food and basic necessities. They are delivering emergency kits that include food, medicine, masks, and water disinfectant. The team is also helping small farmers ensure that any basic grains they have from their first harvest are properly stored. These actions will help people recover from this unprecedented disaster.

Long-Term Impact

Local, community based organizations such as Red COMAL have the knowledge and infrastructure in place to to mitigate the immediate impacts of the storm on the most vulnerable communities they serve, as well as address the long-term food insecurity that will result. Once immediate needs are met, their sustainable agriculture program will provide the skills, materials, and expertise needed for long-term recovery. 100% of funds will go directly to strengthen Red COMAL's response to the crisis.
