Farmed Animal Welfare Update - August 2026

By Kathy Duncan | Director, National Programs

Hello,

Thank you for your support and care for farmed animals in our country. Humane Canada continues to advance farmed animal welfare through expert leadership, formal Code of Practice submissions, and public engagement opportunities. We are pleased to share this update with you on our progress across key national animal welfare initiatives.

Beef Cattle Welfare

Our farmed animal welfare expert completed a detailed review of the draft beef cattle Code of Practice. We called for clear standards for low-stress weaning, requirements for shelter, and improvements to address lameness. Our suggestions called for strong, measurable requirements and were supported by scientific research on beef cattle welfare.

Equine Code in the Final Stages

The Code Development Committee, including our equine welfare expert, is now considering all public comments as it finalizes the Code of Practice. Our farmed animal welfare expert will work alongside our equine welfare expert to achieve a final Code that improves the welfare of equines across Canada.

Hatching Eggs, Breeders, Chickens, and Turkeys Code

This Code of Practice is being prepared for public feedback in the fall of 2026. We are preparing information on how the public can participate in reviewing the Code and ensure their voices are heard.

Public Asked for Input on the Sheep Code

The Sheep Code of Practice opened for public comment in August. Humane Canada along with our partners and animal welfare experts will be calling on our members and the public to provide feedback during the public comment period. Should you be interested in engaging now you may read the draft code of practice linked here

We welcome you to participate by providing your comments here until October 10, 2026.

We greatly appreciate your input and kind gift to Humane Canada so we can continue this important work to enhance the welfare of farmed animals in Canada.
