Hello,
Thank you for your support of Humane Canada and Farmed Animal Welfare. We are pleased to share an important and exciting update with you!
The prohibition of Export of Horses by Air for Slaughter Act, a new Private Members’ Bill proposing to ban the export of live horses for slaughter overseas was introduced this week! This news comes after more than 36,000 Canadians signed a House of Commons petition calling on the Government to ban the export of live horses for slaughter overseas.
Since 2013, more than 40,000 horses have been exported from Canada to Japan for human consumption. Over 2,000 of these horses have been flown to their death since September 2021, despite the Prime Minister issuing a mandate calling on the federal Minister of Agriculture to ban this practice in December 2021.
NO animal should suffer this fate, and we thank MP Tim Louis for introducing this bill. This milestone also exemplifies the importance of YOUR efforts! We thank you for signing your support, contacting MPs and donating to Humane Canada so we can continue our important advocacy work.
The Government of Canada has heard your concern and Humane Canada will continue to amplify the voice of Canadians who want to see real change for animals. Thank you so much and we will continue to update you on this important issue.
