Accelerating Leadership Development for Africans

Young people in Africa face significant barriers - inadequate education, unemployment, and lack of opportunity. These barriers limit their successful transitions in 5 key areas: Education, Employment, Healthcare, Social Mobility, and Active Citizenship. The connection of these transition challenges requires an enabling environment that provides solutions to bridge the learning gaps while leveraging digital disruption (in learning and other spheres of life) to equip young Africans and scale development interventions to drive the continent’s growth -This is the purpose of the LEAP Leadership Institute.

The LEAP Leadership Institute (LLI), by LEAP Africa, through its diverse programmes, courses and research outputs, aims to develop an ecosystem of thoughtful and transformative leaders who advocate for the urgent and ambitious change Africa needs and scale youth leadership development interventions to drive Africa’s growth.

With your support in 2022, LLI launched its inaugural virtual course on Positive Youth Development (PYD) for Executive Leaders, Programme Managers/Coordinators, Fundraising and Partnerships Managers, Grant Administrators and Managers. We also concluded an eight weeks hybrid Leadership Accelerator Programme that equips African women between the ages of 21-35 with the knowledge and skills to reach leadership positions in their various organizations/ career fields and pave ways for them to actively explore opportunities for leadership in workplaces and across different sectors.

We are setting the pace to do so much more in 2023 and beyond, and we are counting on your unwavering support in equipping more Africans with the right leadership skills for the continent’s development.

Preparing African Women and Addressing Gender Gap

There is a dearth of women’s leadership in Africa (Mckinsey, 2020). The lack of representation and participation of young women in Leadership positions is based on the assumed lack of leadership capacity for young women to lead (African Development Bank). The positioning of women is a factor that symbolizes the patriarchal nature of most African societies, and this misconception denies women many opportunities to take on leadership roles both in the private and public sectors. Women’s desire for leadership positions is hampered by numerous obstacles, including pervasive and often subtle attitudes and beliefs that women are unequal to men at home, at work and in government.

The just concluded Leadership Accelerator Programme in partnership with WILAN Global for Young Women is one of the platforms bridging the gap to pave ways for African Women to actively explore opportunities for leadership in workplaces and across different sectors. This programme for Young African Women is an eight weeks hybrid Programme that equips African women between the ages of 21-35 with the knowledge and skills to reach leadership positions in their various organizations/ career fields. Female industry experts led sessions on “Identity and Self Leadership”, “Financial Literacy and Salary Negotiation”, “Effective Communication and Leadership”, “Women’s right, Office Politics and Conflict Management in workplace”, and “Building Leadership Influence and Network”. The program highlight was the physical mentorship/ closing ceremony featuring a mentoring session and a panel discussion. The panel session had top female leaders like Kehinde Ayeni - Ag Executive Director, LEAP Africa; Abosede George-Ogan- CEO, WILAN Global; Molade Adeniyi- CEO, WAVE; Hansatu Adegbite -Executive Director, WIMBIZ, and Amabelle Nwakanma - Director of Programmes, LEAP Africa; lead conversations on bridging the gender gap in leadership through capacity building programmes. Participants of the accelerator programme also had an exclusive one-on-one mentorship session with some phenomenal female leaders.
