Summer to be remembered

By Gentaro Yui | Director

Exciting summer full of children!
Exciting summer full of children!

Dear supporters,

Thank you for your continuous support!  MORIUMIUS has finished our fourth summer.  Over one hundred children visited our summer program.  Mixture of local, national, and international children gathered to MORIUMIUS to enjoy the nature as well as to interact with local people.  Learning sustainable living through experiences in forest, farm land, and ocean were the theme here, adding local culture and history of what happen on March 11, 2011.

It has been over seven and a half year since the disaster struck this region.    Permanent homes are almost finished, and more locals are starting to come back to their hometown.  Ten meter sea wall has constructed, covering the bay of Ogatsu.

MORIUMIUS was ranked third in Nikkei's national ranking of renovated abandoned schoold in Japan!  Nikkei is one of the largest newspaper pubilisher in Japan, focused on economy like Wall Street Journal of US.

We are continuing to work closely with local elementary school to visit monthly to learn about sustainability as well as their hometown.  They are very happy to be in nature, and to be with children gathering from around the world.  We also started to provide after school program for junior high school students from September.

Artist at MORIUMIUS project has been very active this past summer, receving three artist from US and from Brazil.  They have provided so many creative moments for children but also for the local community.  Now MORIUMIUS is filled with art, becoming to be an art museum!

Also, we have had special guest such as former chef at world renowned restaurant “Gordon Ramsey" in UK, and former champion of World Pasta Championship.  His special talent added unique experiences that children could not gain.

Past weekend was a very special weekend at MORIUMIUS.  As fall approaches, our 7th annual sporting event was organized with the local community.  More than one hundred locals as well as families and corporate guests gathered to organize one big event focused on sports.  Many physical activities even for older generation was held.  MORIUMIUS was filled with so many smiles!

Warm regards,
