1. Introduction
The International Career Advancement Program (ICAP, www.icapaspen.org) is a professional leadership development program for mid-career professionals from groups underrepresented in international affairs in the United States, sponsored by the Josef Korbel School of International Studies at the University of Denver and by the Aspen Institute. ICAP provides a vast support network, executive career advice, mentors, policy and research background and assistance in order to help promising professionals have a more effective voice, achieve their potential and assume leadership positions in international affairs in the United States, in both the public and the private sectors. It is based on the realization that US leadership which draws on the full range of talent and diversity of the US population, including underrepresented minorities and LGBTQ, will be more legitimate, enhancing the quality, effectiveness and creativity of US participation in global affairs.
The ICAP Alumni Association (ICAP AA), designed to retain and strengthen the impact of the program---a listserv, a newsletter, the Alumni Association itself, a springtime reunion meeting each year in Washington, DC, policy forums, periodic meetings and workshops conducted by senior officials, social gatherings and on-going career advising. As a consequence, most of the alumni of the program remain in contact and supportive of each other---an important network for career and personal assistance. In addition, the 40 senior mentors and staff also remain an active part of the network.
2. Program Goal and Objectives
This September ICAP AA planned a week-long series of events in DC and in NY for the alumni network! The purpose of this week was to take stock of the role and impact of ICAP and its Alumni Association, provide both policy briefs and social events in order to allow alum to reconnect, participate in career enhancing briefings and collaborate on a vision for a stronger future for ICAP and its 400+ strong alumni.
3. Program Summary
Thursday, September 18 from 7pm -9pm - Dinner with Ken Payumo, ICAPer and UN Hero: On this special occasion, we celebrated one of our very own, Ken Payumo[1], and heard from him directly about his extraordinary courage and heroism serving at the UN Mission in South Sudan. Ken was the head of the UN camp in Bor, South Sudan and courageously stopped government forces from entering the camp, protecting 12,000 civilians who had been displaced due to the conflict. As part of the UN's 2014 World Humanitarian Day, Ken and his story were featured prominently. This kicked of the first of many inspirational events that took place this week that allowed ICAP Alumni to reconnect to seek guidance.
Monday, September 22 from 5-8pm - Volunteer Opportunity at DC Central Kitchen: A core ICAP AA value is to “pay it forward” so ICAPAA organized a group volunteering opportunity at DC Central Kitchen (425 Second Street NW), where a group of ICAP Alum helped DC Central Kitchen's staff prepare over 5,000 meals by cutting, chopping and peeling thousands of pounds of food.
Tuesday, September 23 at 12pm and 6pm (EST) - Conference Call on “Future of ICAP and Value of ICAP AA”: Dr. Tom Rowe, Founder and Director of the International Career Advancement Program, Associate Professor and former Dean of the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver, and Charlotte G. Kea, President of the ICAP Alumni Association, invited all ICAP alumni members to participate in a conference call focused on ICAP, its future, the network, and the importance and benefits of ICAP AA.
Wednesday, September 24 at 5:30pm – ICAP Alumni Networking Happy Hour: ICAP AA organized a networking happy hour and meet up with fellow ICAPers and senior advisers at Piola (2208 14th Street, NW).
Thursday, September 25 at 6:30pm - Workshop on Personal Branding: Tasha "TC" Cooper, president of Upward Action, an online reputation management and social marketing consultancy, presented “Leveraging Social Media to Build an Influential Online Reputation.” This workshop focused on personal branding, online reputation management and social media for professionals in International Affairs.
Saturday, September 27 at 12pm - Annual ICAP Alumni Association Picnic at Meridian Hill Park: The week ended with the annual ICAP Potluck Picnic.
[1]Ken Payumo is currently the Chief of the Peacekeeping Operations Support Section for the Department of Safety and Security. This section is responsible for overseeing the security of all UN peacekeeping missions. Having more than 14 years of experience in the United Nations, Mr. Payumo’s UN service includes that of Legal and Policy Advisor, United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET); Political Officer, Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO)/Asia Middle East Division (AMED); Mission Management Officer (DPKO Police Division), and most recently Head of Office for Unity and later Jonglei states, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Prior to the UN, Mr. Payumo had served as a police officer in the New York City Police Department. Mr. Payumo is a citizen of the United States of America and was born in New York City.
