Amphion Quartet spring residency strikes a chord

Last Tuesday morning, the Amphion String Quartet performed for 65 students in the I Have a Dream program at Reynolds Middle School. They sat on a small stage in front of a white board that read, “Do not be ashamed of your story for it will inspire others.”

This is an important message for these children. At Reynolds, 20% of the students are homeless and 98% qualify for free or reduced lunch.

The students were enraptured. They asked wonderful questions of the artists, and particularly enjoyed their performance of former Protégé Project artist Dan Schlosberg’s “Advance,” even requesting an encore of the viola cadenza.

The Amphion’s performance at Reynolds was just one of seven education and outreach activities they did during their spring education residency, serving more than 200 people. During their time here, the Amphion String Quartet:

  • did a side-by-side rehearsal with the Metropolitan Youth Symphony. Amphion members sat in the orchestra, helping coach the young music students and leading by example.
  • coached string quartets from Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Youth String Ensemble (children about 9-10 years old) and Portland State University.
  • gave interactive performances at Bravo Youth Orchestra, VIBE of Portland, and the I Have a Dream Foundation at Reynolds Middle School.
  • and performed live at All Classical Radio’s weekly Thursdays @ Three show, broadcast to thousands of listeners over the radio waves and streaming online.

The Amphion String Quartet’s visit is special not only for the incredible opportunities and education they provide budding young musicians, but they are also a shining example of Chamber Music Northwest’s Protégé Project.

One of the first ensembles to participate in our intensive summer institute in 2011 and 2012, the Amphion String Quartet gained valuable experience and mentorship through the five-week Protégé program. Since then, they joined the roster of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s CMS Two Program in fall 2013, and through LCCMS, the ensemble made its Alice Tully Hall debut in March 2014, about which the New York Times praised “the focused, forceful young Amphion String Quartet” for its “sharply detailed performances.” Amphion has now performed all over the country and the world, receiving numerous honors and critical acclaim.

These multi-dimensional education opportunities and success stories could not be possible without the generous support of people like you. Thank you for partnering with Chamber Music Northwest to create such great chamber music in Portland!
