For five weeks this summer as part of Chamber Music Northwest’s 2013 Summer Festival, the Protégé Project musicians played in multiple Portland venues—concert halls, nightclubs, theatre--and earned rave reviews for their energy, passion and skill. The Protégés also worked in multiple Portland venues, teaching young music students, discussing music with audiences, and training with visiting nationally known chamber musicians.
The Protégé Project is one of Chamber Music Northwest’s most exciting new initiatives.The 2013 Protégés included the Dover String Quartet, Violinist Benjamin Beilman, Pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, and Andy Akiho, a doctoral candidate at Princeton and a composer specializing in steel drum compositions and performance.
The Protégé Project is a training and performance institute for young professionals, and for Portland audiences and music students, it is an exciting opportunity to witness the fresh energy and creativity of these musicians at the beginning of their careers. After completing their five-week residency in Portland, for example, The Dover String Quartet traveled directly to the prestigious Banff International String Quartet Competition where they took a near-sweep of prizes.
The Dover String Quartet will return to Portland next year, along with new Proteges, to work alongside Chamber Music Northwest luminaries at the 2014 Summer Festival.
