The main objective is to affect change in the lives of hardworking yet impoverished families with children, for the long term and in a sustainable way. We want to uplift them and support their ability to help themselves. With the support of Wegene Ethiopian Foundation (WEF) deserving families will be able to meet their basic daily needs, recieve health care treatment, educate their children, maintain their family structure, and gain the means to earn income with either training or small business
Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, has about 4 million people, which makes up 6% of the country's total population. Poverty is rampant and widespread throughout the country, as well as in the capital city. The children that belong to these improvised families often times end up being forced to live on the streets of Addis, while the young girls find themselves resorting to a life in prostitution. Because of this poverty cycle, most lose hope of becoming a contributing member of society.
WEF believes that in order to help the children in these families, we need to address the needs of the whole family unit. WEF volunteer caregivers who live in the same communities as the families, foster a relationship of support and accountability. They mentor parents, dispense funds, tutor children and give overall support to ensure their success. The women how are heads of families are encouraged to take charge of their lives with skills training, vocational training or small business start up
The WEF program's primary focus is to fulfill the education needs of the children by enabling their parents to create a conducive environment in the home, where all basic needs including food, shelter, clothing and healthcare are met. Each family is vetted as hardworking and they are ready for an oppotunity to change their lives. The parents' ability to provide for their children is sustained through the support of WEF volunteer caretakers who implement the program and mentor the family growth.
