The Housing and dignified life program in San Mateo del Mar, Oaxaca benefiting the Ikoots indigenous people affected by the earthquake in 2017, is in its 2nd phase.
In alliance with Jesuit Universities, and Civil associations specialized in participative social construction. Was realized an evaluation and an integrative design process involving each beneficiary, looking at their particular needs. Some houses needed total reconstruction and others partial reconstruction, this decisions were made with the families.
The program is possible thanks to the alliance between universities, civil associatiions and church foundations , for which Loyola Foundation has favored the connection and coordination, placing the Ikoots as protagonists and beneficiaries. The following organizations are participating in this project:
When teaming up with the local community, we realized the need to focus in the social network reconstruction. Therefore, CIAS por la Paz made a diagnosis recognizing the local virtuous circles and developed series of workshop, called “Strong families” in which 249 families and 216 individuals participated. All of them made a commitment to work for the community unit.
Related to the construction process, the families benefited from this Program not only get to rebuild their homes after the catastrophes, but also learn new trade skills for anti-seismic construction, which represent new possible job opportunities to increase their family’s stability and income.
We also are making arrangements with different government and private institutions in order to build community facilities as a chapel, a market and a Comunitarian Center
