December 2012 Update from the Field

Thanks to generous supporters like you, USERL was able to respond to an emergency call from Sampson County, NC officials, to take in an emaciated mare in life-threatening condition. Your donations helped with initial care, and ongoing fundraising will continue for her expenses on her long road to recovery. The mare, now named “Isis”, is a seven year old BLM Mustang, as indicated from her freezebrand. She was being kept in a small dirt area filled with trash and tethered, with no food or water. Old wounds on her legs indicate previous entanglement with the rope, but luckily she appears without any lingering lameness issues from the trauma. Severe diarrhea from ingesting large amounts of dirt has already resolved with careful re-feeding of good hay. This week, if she continues to do well with the re-feeding schedule she will begin on small amounts of feed concentrate to boost her energy levels. She currently needs assistance to stand after laying down for naps and is on 24 hour observation.

Rehabilitating a horse in Isis’s severe condition is time consuming and very expensive. However, the rewards of returning them to good health and a second chance at a good life are priceless! During this season of giving, please consider a donation to USERL to help “Isis” and others like her. So many horses are suffering in this poor economy. We can’t help them all, but with your help – we can make a difference for a few!

May 2012 Field Update!

May 2012 Field Update!

Your gracious contributions have continued to assist horses in dire need involved in county cruelty investigations. The update in February spotlighted 4 horses that your donations assisted. Since then, one was humanely euthanized due to illness (all were exposed to Salmonella on the property) and a 5^th horse from the case came in - Takoda. In addition, the pregnant mare gave birth to a healthy filly May 3^rd, and was named "Tika" which means flower! Without your support of this program, these horses would not have had a safe place to go for food, shelter and medical care. Thank you for giving the surviving horses a second chance for a new life!

In addition, USERL is currently assisting Dinwiddie County in Virginia regarding 60 horses seized from an owner a week ago. USERL is assisting in triaging the horses to determine needs for those in critical condition (and moving them to appropriate fosters that can provide for their care), and organizing efforts to help the county re-home others in the group as well as assisting with in-kind and monetary donations for all the horses care.

2012 continues to be a challenge in meeting the needs of counties USERL serves in housing/caring for horses needing placement in a responsible, able program/home. Your support allows USERL to meet some of those needs and share in the rewarding experience of giving a neglected/abused horse a second chance at life! The county needs are almost always critical for needing immediate help when cases such as this occur. Thank you for supporting this project which gives USERL the initial funds to cover horses in such great need!

February 2012 Update!

Dear Global Giving donors,

Your donations through this project have recently assisted two of four horses that just entered our program from an active cruelty case in North Carolina. One of those two being assisted by Global Giving donors is a heavily pregnant mare, so in a few short weeks it will be 3 from this case assisted by this project! All four from this case are in very poor condition and at high risk of a difficult recovery from their severe neglect. That makes 30 horses assisted by Global Giving donors!!

This group of four horses is expected to be very costly to rehabilitate due to their severe neglect and poor condition. Additional horses from the same cruelty case may need to enter our program as well as the county investigation continues. Please help us give them the second chance they deserve in life! Be a part of their recovery and new lease on life – donate today!

So how did we help 30 horses with only ¾ of the project funds projected? USERL works on a foundation base of “community” giving to assist horses in need. That means that all resources possible are utilized to maximize every dollar donor’s donate. Many of the 30 horses that have come in since the Global Giving project began were also assisted by public donations (both monetary and in-kind donations) solicited via our website/facebook, discounts from community vets and feed/hay dealers, and some funds from private foundations. It’s always difficult to gauge how much these resources will fund a particular horse, but we’ve had a great success in the past two years bringing all of these resources together to assist a horse, and make everyone a part of it!

Currently, there is still an incredible need for more horses from county investigations of equine neglect. To fill this need, we need your help! Help USERL to bring more horses into the program needing immediate assistance/shelter/medical care. These cases happen without notice or ability to plan or fund raise ahead of time. All 30 horses Global Giving donors helped fund in this project were in immediate need with none or little notice before them coming in. Without Global Giving donors, we could not have helped these horses alone! Help USERL assist more horses in need, at a time of great need for our services. Let’s increase this project goal for 45 horses assisted into our program! We know with our ability to utilize resources and the generosity of Global Giving donors, we can do it!
