QUARTERLY REPORT HOPE  FOR WOMEN

Report by Ronald Kato

Project title: HOPE FOR WOMEN

Background:

The project-Hope for women began in 2018 that was geared to give a helping hand to individual women in order to improve their lives in Buwere MPigi district as regards sanitation, water and hygiene, food security, house construction, rainwater harvesting tanks/jars, lighting of houses, land less women.

Case study:

We visited a project beneficiary of Buwere, with 4 kids, a peasant farmer who high lightened on her physical status to be wanting and requested some support from KDF.

Her capacity lies in learning the sewing machine, cultivation of bananas and sweet potatoes at subsistence level, rearing of pigs, ducks, tinny dogs and they stay in a ram shacked house full of holes in old sheets, dusty floor leaping  almost to collapse.

She added; she faces the following challenges which include:

  • Limited bean seeds
  • Limited maize seeds
  • A new sewing machine
  • Solar system for lighting her home
  • Inadequate funds to construct her toilet
  • Mosquito nets for the whole family to sleep under.
  • Inadequate funds to finance her kids’ education.

In respect to her needs, she strongly emphasized the issue of bean seeds and maize seeds to cater for the rushing rainy season about 10kgs each species. During the monitoring it was realized that all challenges cut across among the women in the project area.

In respect to the above; we visited another beneficiary where we found out that the seeds given to her- beans and banana suckers given to them where planted and are in a good condition.

Activities:

The following activities have been undertaken by KDF team to foster improved lively hood among homesteads:

The team emphasized the following critical areas-

  • Children washing hands after visiting the toilet,
  • washing hands before eating food,
  • Washing hands after cleaning young babies’ bottom.
  • Women were met and emphasis was done to clean water containers which collect water from the water sources.
  • We distributed bean seeds to 20 women and banana suckers.
  • To make follow-up of the agricultural seeds supplied with an extensional worker.
  • Mobilization of the women to participate in the project.

Challenges:

The village families do not have solar system to light their homes, mainly they use local candles to cater for the lighting source; this puts their children lives prune to fire related challenges.

They also lack a water source where individuals access water from the ponds and sometimes it’s congested.

The area faces impassable road networks to their homesteads.

There is also a high level of illiteracy in the area.

Frequent family breakouts where women and men divorce due to high poverty levels.

Insufficient funds to facilitate the KDF work in restoring the lives of the people.

Wayforward:

We appeal to donors to donate generous to our hope for the women project to address some of the challenges facing women.

We appeal for support for basic education to curb the illiteracy level and the youths in particular.

We mobilized local materials to rehabilitate the water sources; they include sand, clay and women are ready to give unskilled labor.

We need to stabilize the landless women with some pieces of land like an acre to settle with their families.
