Empower 50 Refugee Women in Jordan through Art

by The Advocacy Project

The Advocacy Project (AP) is seeking $10,000 to invest in talented Syrian and Iraqi women who have sought refuge in Jordan. The funds will enable the women to add an embroidery group to their collective (The Hope Workshop). Working with our Jordanian partner, the Collateral Repair Project, we will deploy Peace Fellows to help the ladies of Hope produce embroidery in Jordan and find a market in the US. The artists made a great start in 2016 by telling their stories through two spectacular quilts.

Over two million refugees from the wars in Syria and Iraq have been displaced in Jordan. Most are women who often arrived traumatized, impoverished, and grieving the loss of family members. Jordan forbids refugees from seeking employment, which limits their ability to use their skills and increases their dependency on aid. One way to help is to provide avenues for income generation. The challenge is to help talented refugees like Roa'a, seen in the photo, while respecting Jordanian regulations.

This 3-year project will help the ladies of the Hope Workshop in Amman to produce and sell high-quality embroidery while also turning their workshop into a sustainable business. They will start in 2017 by developing a business plan and budget, and electing officers. They will then decide on a product line including marketable items such as totes, pillows, holiday cards, dolls, knitwear, and wall hangings. Your donations will pay for material and training during the all-important start-up phase.

Long-Term Impact

Our goal is that the Hope Workshop will become a model for talented women refugees in Jordan. We want these 50 ladies of Hope to learn new skills and also grow in confidence from producing and selling beautiful products. Equally important, we expect that they will inspire other refugees, which makes it particularly important that we profile their work and share it with others. This will start with our reports to you, our donors! Thank you in advance.
