Since January, we have been actively working to build a 2nd floor to Hope Academy in Guatemala to create space for an additional 100 girls living in poverty to have the opportunity at a life changing education. Due to a lack of space, we've had two classes of students, our fourth and fifth graders, learning at tables set up in the school's hallways. Every day when they arrive at school, they look up to the second floor to check in on the progress of what will be their new classrooms next year. To say that they are excited would be an understatement.
Thus far, we have raised just over $200,000 for the project, have finished our first phase of construction, and are actively moving into phase two. Phase one's construction included two new classrooms, as well as a finished staircase and hallways on the second floor. These rooms will officially open to our girls at the beginning of their January 2024 school year.
At this point, we are anticipating being done with phase two by April of 2024, and at that point will actively begin fundraising for the final phase of our project, which will include 2 new classrooms as well as an extra set of bathrooms. Upon completion of phase three, we will also open our program to middle school age girls.
Due to a generous matching donor and a number of successful fundraising events throughout the summer, we are ahead of our fundraising goal and are confident that we will be able to finish the project by the end of 2024.
