This project will construct a 2nd floor for Hope Academy, the first and only bilingual STEAM school for girls living in poverty in Guatemala. Hope Academy currently serves 101 children ages 3 years old through 6th grade. Completion of their 2nd floor will add four new classrooms and a teachers' office to the school and allow them to educate an additional 100 children every year.
In Guatemala approximately 66% of girls who enroll in school drop out before the third grade. This problem is worse in Indigenous and impoverished communities around the country and is one of the leading causes of ongoing poverty in Guatemala as young, uneducated women marry and have children young and lack the education to find a good job to provide for their families.
Hope Academy provides high quality, bilingual, STEAM based education specifically to girls coming from poor communities to just over 100 students every year with educational training focused on the major Guatemalan industries of tourism and agriculture. Upon completion of its 2nd floor, Hope Academy will be able to educate an extra 100 girls every year.
The project will educate 200 impoverished girls every year. Graduates from the program will have the skills they need to either pursue higher education or find good jobs to support themselves and their families. Over the next 10 years, a continuing influx of educated women finding quality jobs will significantly combat poverty in future generations.
