GreaterGood South Africa continues to develop the social sector in South Africa, working with over a thousand causes and over nine thousand registered givers.
Mandela Day
GreaterGood is gearing up for Mandela Day on 18 July. The iconic man is turning 93, and in recognition of his birthday, South Africans are asked to give 67 minutes of their time volunteering for a good cause – one minute for every year that Mandela spent fighting for freedom. GreaterGood provides a platform for good causes to promote their Mandela day projects and connect with volunteers.
SASIX
We market and raise funds for projects listed on the South African Social Investment Exchange (SASIX) which have the potential to have an enormous social impact. These include a project to bolster rural healthcare by training pharmacist assistants; a project that supports grandmothers to care for kids who have lost their parents to AIDS; and a project that supports a music academy for disadvantaged youngsters. Between March 2011 and June 2011, SASIX raised over R333 000 (about $50 000).
With the ongoing support of our generous donors we hope to make a difference in these and many more projects.
Communicating with our causes
We have recently surveyed our causes to find out more about their needs. This has led us to reconsider some of our processes to lower the administrative burden for causes and to make it easier for them to connect with donors and volunteers online. We are also looking at introducing some additional services, like increasing the resources available to organisations online and running regular knowledge sessions to assist organisations with things like marketing, proposal writing and strategic planning. We hope to start rolling out these new services in the coming months.
