Happy New Year and thank you for the difference you've helped make this year!
The good news: During 2012 the number of cats we were able to help increased compared to 2011. This is the second year in a row that our numbers have climbed since 2010 when the recession hit. Thanks to our loyal supporters and dedicated volunteers this year we took in 432 cats. Of these, 377 found their permanent adoptive homes during 2012. Those who are still waiting for just the right family are in the care of our loving foster parents. We are also happy to announce the expansion of our rescue/adoption efforts through the addition of a new adoption location in partnership with Suzie's Cat Rescue. The new location in the Sports Arena PetSmart placed 114 cats and kittens in addition to our numbers.
One special cat who took quite a while but finally found the perfect home is Ricky. We rescued Ricky from the local pound, where he was dumped by his owners when he was 5 years old. Nearly all our volunteers got to know Ricky, a 17-lb. gray tabby lug who likes to climb up and “perch” on the nearest set of cat-friendly shoulders and cuddle one's neck. Ricky is a sweetheart, but unfortunately he often became depressed during his frequent visits to busy adoption centers and it took over a year before the perfect family came along. Now Ricky is the newest addition to a family who adores him and he is loving his new forever-home.
As 2013 gets under way, we'd like to share our New Year's Goal: In 2013 we aim to help 500 cats. We cannot make the difference we do without you, and we sincerely appreciate your ongoing support. From everyone here at San Diego Cat AdopTion Service, Happy New Year and all the best to you and yours!
Thanks to the generosity of our donors, our Homes for Paws Initiative is going strong! Since the beginning of June, we have placed 144 cats and kittens in loving families. These are cats that would not have had a chance at a happy, healthy life without the work of the amazing volunteers at San Diego Cat AdopTion Service and your donations. One incredible cat we rescued, Lucy, has been through enough troubles for a lifetime, and she is not even two years old. Lucy spent the first part of her life in a shelter with one of the highest kill rates in the state; from there she was taken by a woman who turned out to be a hoarder, saving animals from euthenasia only to keep them in cages so small they could not even stand up and turn around. When animal control officers raided the woman's home in May, Lucy was sent to a San Diego County shelter where she remained until October, when Cat AdopTion Service found her and took her in. What is truly astonishing is that despite the enormous challenges and negative environments in which she has spent most of her 22 short months, Lucy has managed to develop and maintain her incredible personality. She is outgoing and affectionate, loves people, and purrs constantly!
Want to make your donations go even farther? Give on a Global Giving Bonus Day! The next Bonus Day is scheduled to start on Oct. 16 at 9:01 PM California time and end Oct 17 at 8:59 PM. During the day, Global Giving will match an extra 30% of your gift (up to $1000). There is a set amount of funding available for the day ($50,000), and once it runs out there is no more matching. So if you're planning to give this month or next, make it during the first part of the bonus day to ensure your gift goes as far as possible. Thank you again for your generosity and love of cats, without your help we could not make such a big difference for so many homeless cats.
Our Homes for Paws initiative has been very successful. Thanks in part to our increased funding through our generous donors on Global Giving, we have been able to save many cats! During the months of April and May, San Diego Cat AdopTion Service took in 87 homeless cats. Because cats give birth in the spring and fall, many of that number were kittens. Most all of the kittens we take in are found abandoned, living outside in boxes, under houses, around dumpsters. Two of our kittens this spring were reported by workers at a junk yard, they were living inside an old car engine. They were completely covered in dirty motor oil when we first rescued them. They are now healthy, clean and CUTE!! During this time period, 95 of our cats and kittens were adopted! Sending a kitten or cat home to a wonderful and loving forever family is a great feeling. Thank you for helping so many cats and kittens find their forever homes this spring!
