2022 Home for the Holidays Report

By Brianna Reddeman | Development Associate

Life has not been easy this year for Ms. Marian, a mother and grandmother from Southeast Louisiana. As her daughter was recently diagnosed with a terminal form of cancer, Marian took on full-time caretaking responsibilities for her two grandsons, Brendin (5) and Myles (2). She was committed to providing them with the stability that they needed during such a difficult time.

Just days after the boys moved in, Hurricane Ida made landfall, blowing the roof off of her home. Fortunately, Marian and the boys made it through the storm unscathed. Sadly, she couldn’t say the same for her home. Ms. Marian's home sustained major damage from the storm, causing the roof to collapse and interior to flood. She was devastated by the thought of not being able to provide her grandsons with a safe and secure place to call home.

Fortunately, thanks to your support, our team was able to say YES to Ms. Marian.

SBP immediately began recovery work to help Ms. Marian navigate a clear path forward. SBP provided new insulation, drywall and flooring throughout the house, as well as exterior and porch repairs. On March 11, 2022, SBP gathered a group of friends and neighbors to officially welcome the Chauvin family back home.

Your generosity and support of SBP’s 2021 Home for the Holidays campaign, which returned nearly 50 families home, made this joyful day possible- thank you!

2021 was SBP’s most impactful year to date:

  • Build: We helped more than 1500 households through debris removal, mucking and gutting, mold remediation, repairs, and full rebuilds. But re-building is just the beginning., As those of you who have volunteered with us know, there's no greater feeling than helping a family return back home. The work we do every day in the field with clients helps us to learn just how broken the disaster recovery system is for the hard working families we serve.
  • Prepare: We know that if our clients could choose, they would choose never to need our help in the first place. So we are proud to have provided pre- and post-disaster education and resources to more than one million people through webinars, door-knocking, and targeted digital marketing.
  • Shape:In addition to directly impacting people via rebuilding and preparedness education, we can make an even greater impact by looking upstream. As many of you know, philanthropy plays such an essential role in disaster recovery while communities wait 2 to 3 (or more) years for federal funding to become available. The problem with the federal funding, though, is that it is tied up in bureaucracy, causing low-income families to suffer even longer. In fact, 60% of disaster funding is unspent today. Together w/ Walmart foundation, our team is addressing the problems that cause these delays via our leader practitioner course. Last year, we hosted more than 1,000 people who are responsible for spending these funds - which are intended to help low and moderate income families rebuild their homes - and our course provided clear and achievable direction to help these leaders unlock and distribute the more than $37B in their collective programs.

  • Share Lastly but certainly not least is what we share with other organizations. Thanks to generous corporate and foundation partners, we have granted $6.7M and shared 72 AmeriCorps members since we began the program in 2017. That resulted in us serving 899 more families than SBP could have done alone. In 2021 we raised approx $4M for other organizations.

This incredible impact would not have been possible without your support - thank you!
