Education and Protection for At-risk Children in Tunja

By Elisa Cappai | Junior Project Manager

Dear Donors,

Our action continues with commitment to support 40 children and adolescents in vulnerable conditions, welcomed at Hogar San Jeronimo in Tunja, Colombia. This city, located at over 2,800 meters above sea level in the Andean region of the department of Boyacá, faces economic inequalities, environmental pollution and social problems. Wealth is concentrated in the hands of a small part of the population, while many inhabitants live in poverty, with limited access to essential services and opportunities. The perception of insecurity is high, due to corruption and petty crime. In addition, young people from vulnerable backgrounds are particularly exposed to marginalization and criminal recruitment. In this scenario, structures such as Hogar San Jeronimo become essential to offer protection, education and a concrete alternative to children and adolescents in difficult situations.

Hogar San Jeronimo represents a haven for minors who come from family backgrounds marked by poverty, abandonment or violence. Thanks to the collaboration with the Congregation of Somaschi Fathers, our local partner, we offer them an educational environment that promotes respect for their fundamental rights and guarantees their future autonomy. Inside the Hogar, children and teenagers receive scholastic support and participate in extracurricular courses that teach them a profession, providing practical skills to build a better future.

The stories of the minors welcomed at Hogar San Jeronimo are testimonies of resilience and hope. For example, L., a boy whose family is marked by physical and mental health problems of his parents and alcohol addictions among his siblings, faces situations of great stress daily. Despite this, L. teaches us that through commitment to study, it’s possible to aspire to escape poverty and build a different future.

Our goal is to continue to guarantee these kids and adolescents a safe and stimulating refuge, where they can grow, learn and develop their potential.

Thank you for your ongoing support!
