2 worlds coming together

By Jan-Peter Kelder | Leadership Siam-Care

What happens when a group of young people between 18 and 27 years old leaves home for two weeks, not just to discover Thailand, but to put their faith into practice?

This summer, a group of young volunteers came to Siam-Care with one simple desire: to share the love of Christ with children and families who are facing difficult circumstances. For two weeks, they rolled up their sleeves, stepped outside their comfort zones and became part of the work of Siam-Care.

Siam-Care supports vulnerable children and families, many of whom are affected by poverty and HIV/AIDS. Our work is not only about financial or practical support. We want people to know that they are seen, valued and loved. The volunteers experienced what that looks like in practice.

From the classroom to the family home
One of the highlights was teaching English to children. For the volunteers, this sometimes meant standing in front of a classroom and trying to explain English to a group of energetic Thai children. But it was about much more than vocabulary and grammar. It was about making connections, having fun and showing the children that someone from the other side of the world cares about them.

The volunteers also joined Siam-Care staff on visits to vulnerable families in their homes. These visits are an important part of our family care programme. Sometimes a family needs practical help, but often the first thing they need is simply someone who listens, encourages them and reminds them that they are not alone. The young people listened to stories, played with children, shared conversations and prayed with families. For some families, having a group of young people take the time to visit them was deeply encouraging.

Faith with sleeves rolled up
Sharing Christ's love also meant getting their hands dirty. The volunteers helped with practical projects around the homes of families in need. They repaired and improved houses, tackled maintenance jobs and helped create safer living conditions. Sometimes the work was as simple as painting, cleaning or gardening; at other times, it involved more substantial construction work.

These practical projects are an important part of Siam-Care's family care. When a family's roof is leaking or there is no safe toilet, a few encouraging words are not enough. Sometimes love looks like picking up a hammer and getting to work.

More than a volunteer trip
For the young people themselves, the two weeks were also a learning experience. They saw another side of Thailand — far away from the beaches and tourist attractions — and met families whose lives are very different from their own. They learned that helping people is not always about having the perfect solution. Sometimes it means listening. Sometimes it means playing with a child. Sometimes it means praying. And sometimes it means fixing a broken roof.

Most importantly, they discovered that sharing God's love does not always require big words. It can be shown through time, attention, kindness and simply being there. That is at the heart of Siam-Care's approach: helping people physically, financially, mentally and spiritually, with the goal of helping vulnerable children and families build a better and more independent future.

A blessing both ways
At the end of the two weeks, it was clear that the volunteers had not only been a blessing to the people they met. The experience had changed them too. They came to Thailand wanting to give something. They left having received a lot as well: new friendships, unforgettable encounters, a deeper understanding of poverty and vulnerability, and a stronger sense of what it means to put their Christian faith into action.

As we look back on their time with Siam-Care, we are grateful for every conversation, every English lesson, every repaired house, every family visit and every prayer.

Two weeks may seem short. But when you give your time, your hands and your heart, those two weeks can make a real difference.
