Prevent HIV-AIDS through Awareness in South Sudan

The epidemic of HIV/AIDS is being neglected in South Sudan, as the administration and civil society remain focused on the political crisis.

The problem is, there is no proper system of treating the virus. The chairman of South Sudan Network for people living with HIV/AIDS said in an interview with a member of Hope Ofiriha.

There are sick people in Magwi County who had failed to get treatment and information on how to fight and live with AIDS virus.

A patient (38) refused to be named, tested positive for HIV in 2012, but had done well over three years with the assistance of local HIV/AIDS workshop operated by Hope Ofiriha.

However, with the ongoing civil conflict, things have changed - particularly in respect to medical supplies.

When a country gained independence, no programs were set up to address the issue of this deadly virus comprehensively.

We are sitting on a time bomb regarding HIV/AIDS; anything can happen, a Villager said. Although Hope Ofiriha is doing well in term of awareness campaigning, the country is doing badly in the treatment.

The trainers will be holding discussions with villagers, especially boys and girls on how to use the condom. The volunteers will demonstrate the usage the practically. The aim is to make sure a target group understands how to avoid to be affected by HIV/AIDS.
