Reducing HIV stigma through higher education

First Report

Higher Education reduces HIV stigma in Thailand

Dear Family, Friends, and Colleagues:

Individuals living with HIV, through no fault of their making, are challenged to deal with society's shortcomings. Our goal is to educate our children living with HIV, encouraging them to be strong, vibrant individuals who refuse to be defined by how society views them but by defining who they choose to be.

This first quarter has been a huge challenge in assuring our children experience quality education. With Omicron now the main variant spreading throughout Thailand, all schools closed during this period.

Our children are now utilizing online class learning. Reports have shown that online learning is a less than perfect approach to instructing our children. With our limited funding and qualified staff, we have focused on providing the best possible education for all of our children.

Early January, COVID spread throughout our project. All of our children and three of our staff were infected with COVID. During this ten-day quarantine period, we worked with our children to continue their online classes. This infection of our children and staff was a major challenge in keeping our children focused on learning; by providing computers to each child's room, our children did succeed in continuing their online learning.

We have now reassessed our approach in working with this younger population with the age change. Our goal is to develop an age-appropriate approach to introducing the concept of the stigma of HIV to our younger children. The objective is to demonstrate that living with HIV does not define the individual; they would be defined by their character and the level of empathy they demonstrate to others.

This approach will create a guideline that will enable our project to be goal-oriented. Reducing the stigma of living with HIV is a long-term approach to creating systematic change in society.

Yours truly,

Kenneth Miller
