Virreyes Hockey is a sports program created by Colegio Madre Teresa to empower girls from socially vulnerable communities in Argentina through field hockey. By combining structured training, mentorship, and educational support, the program fosters inclusion, leadership, and essential life skills to help break the cycle of poverty. Over 150 girls participate in weekly activities that support their personal growth and future opportunities.
Virreyes Hockey was born from a simple yet powerful idea: every girl deserves the opportunity to dream, to play, and to grow-regardless of where she comes from. In neighborhoods like Virreyes, girls grow up in environments where poverty, gender roles, and lack of access to education and sports shape their futures long before they have a chance to shape them for themselves. This initiative exists because these girls deserve more. They deserve to play and they deserve a future full of choices.
VH is much more than a hockey program, it's a safe space where girls can be themselves, learn to lead, develop discipline, and build confidence. It introduces them to values like teamwork, commitment, and resilience-skills that transcend the field and impact every area of life. By offering consistent support, mentorship, and a strong community, the initiative challenges deep-rooted gender norms and provides a path toward personal and educational development.
Virreyes Hockey is not just about teaching girls how to play a sport-it's about equipping them to change their lives. The initiative was founded with a long-term vision: to use hockey as a vehicle for empowerment, education, and transformation. Through sustained support and community-building, Virreyes Hockey seeks to break cycles of poverty, gender inequality, and social exclusion. We aim to build confidence, self-worth, and leadership in young girls.
