Committed to our mission in Myanmar

By Celia Russell | Trustee, Tekkatho Foundation

As you may have seen on the news, on the day that the new parliament of Myanmar was due to assemble for the first time, the elected leadership were detained by the army and a state of emergency was declared.

At the Tekkatho Foundation, we are hugely concerned by the unfolding political events and stand by the efforts of Myanmar teachers in their peaceful protests. We are thankful that our in-country staff are safe.  It’s not clear how our project activities will be affected in the immediate future as our focus is on off-grid regions far from political centres of power and right now schools are closed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We will continue to pursue our plans to keep our students learning long term wherever they live. We have taken steps to ensure that our funds are protected, and can be used as intended.

As an organisation, our mission remains the same. We are committed to providing access to education to some of the most remote and marginalised young people in Myanmar. And we will continue to do this no matter what political changes occur.

Our education projects on GlobalGiving will be part of the matched funding Little-by-Little campaign from March 8th to 12th. During the Little-by-Little campaign, all donations up to $50 from unique donors will be matched at 50% by GlobalGiving.

We are particularly grateful for your continued support and partnership at this time.
