Honoring Veterans

By Stephanie Bowers | Project Leader

On the 17th anniversary of 9/11, we at Jake’s Diapers want to recognize the many ways our veterans have served this country, and the ways we can serve in return.

Since the 9/11 tragedy, we have seen a shift in the people who serve in the U.S. military: a much more diverse population including 17% women, 15.3% African American and 12.1% Hispanic.

The tragedy made an impact on individuals who, like veteran Jared Lyon who had just entered bootcamp August 2011. He said he noticed the atmosphere shift almost immediately on Sept. 11, when many recognized their time in service was now likely to be in wartime.

The simple truth, sadly, is that many of veterans struggle in everyday life after they serve:  almost 1.5 million veterans live in poverty, with the veteran poverty rate for those between 18 and 34 years old is higher than all other age groups, according to an article from Lifeline for Vets. “Veterans are also using food stamps in larger numbers than ever before. Although the rate is still lower than for non-veterans, it is rising at a much faster pace.”

When we help someone out with a simple donation of cloth diapers or period products, we’re eliminating the ongoing financial burden of this basic hygiene necessity. This allows our veterans to afford other basic needs, and lift themselves out of poverty to live a clean, healthy and active life.

Thank you for your support in making this life changing donation for our veterans.
