The Abadacogora Project, was launched in October 2024 to empower 65 vulnerable adolescent girls in Masaka Sector, Kicukiro District, through a 10-month holistic socio-economic empowerment program. The final report shows - in August 2025, 60 participants had successfully completed the program, gaining integrated life skills, reproductive and mental health education, human rights awareness, financial literacy, and vocational training.
This enabled them to build self-confidence, improve employability, strengthen resilience, and better navigate personal and social challenges. The project engaged parents, local leaders, service providers, and role models to ensure community ownership, relevance, and sustainability. Key achievements included stronger savings practices through the creation of saving groups, improved knowledge of health and rights, and enhanced confidence and decision-making skills among participants. By the end, adolescent girls showed significant progress: participation in income-generating activities rose from 2% to 47%, average monthly earnings more than doubled, membership in social and business groups increased from 33% to 100%, and food insecurity dropped from 56% to 22%. These results demonstrate the project’s impact in advancing girls’ economic independence, social inclusion, and overall well-being of project participants and respective families.
The implementation of this project emphasised the need for Helping Young Mothers in particular to Complete Training. Persistent challenges included early pregnancy, caregiving responsibilities, and trauma, which limited participants’ engagement and consistent attendance. The lack of dedicated psychosocial and childcare support increased the workload for trainers, who are now not fully equipped to manage these complex needs, leaving participants’ emotional and practical needs inadequately addressed. This highlighted the need to integrate on-site childcare, age-appropriate resources, and professional psychosocial services, while equipping trainers with psychosocial first aid skills. This integrated approach will allow, in our future programming, young mothers to participate consistently, build resilience and confidence, and strengthen social inclusion.
