REPORT ON INCOME-GENERATING ACTIVITIES FOR WOMEN'S EMPOWERMENT IN EASTERN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

  • Organize monitoring activities on the effects of the war, which have traumatized a large number of people, with children and women being among the most severely affected. Young people (girls and boys), for their part, have abandoned their studies and other economic activities in order to join, voluntarily or by force, the various armed groups operating in their areas of residence. This has resulted in widespread social disintegration and an almost total decline in economic activity throughout the country.

In this context, COJESKI, as a human rights NGO specializing in Protection Monitoring and having demonstrated experience in protecting displaced, returnee, repatriated, resident populations and host communities, as well as in the socio-economic integration and/or reintegration of vulnerable groups, proposes to support internally displaced women (IDP women) through income-generating activities (IGAs) aimed at strengthening their economic empowerment.

To address, at least to some extent, this situation affecting North Kivu Province in general, and particularly women living in displacement camps, the non-governmental organization COJESKI plans to:

  • Conduct vulnerability assessments in displacement camps in order to identify the most vulnerable women-headed households that should continue to receive emergency assistance, as well as those who could be referred to empowerment activities, particularly income-generating activities. In the context of a protracted crisis, emergency response, rehabilitation, and development activities often take place simultaneously when the situation is relatively stable.

  • Implement income-generating activities, including advocacy to facilitate temporary access to employment, provide effective technical support, and promote community resilience.

  • Facilitate discussions on safe access to food, energy, and other essential needs that are not adequately covered by other partners whose targeted interventions are already overstretched. These needs remain urgent.

To this end, the socio-economic reintegration of vulnerable women will contribute to reducing poverty among vulnerable households living in displacement camps, while helping them meet household needs that are not covered by various humanitarian actors.

SUMMARY: What Will Be the Objective of This Project?

The project aims to promote the socio-economic reintegration of vulnerable women and girls by strengthening their capacities and supporting them through income-generating activities and training.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to which the programme/project will contribute during implementation include the fight against poverty through the economic empowerment of women and girls as a pillar of development and stabilization.

The specific target and indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to which the programme will contribute include 100 displaced women living in camps in the city of Goma, Beni, Masisi Territory, Rutshuru, and Nyiragongo Territory.

PROSPECTS

In the coming months, we plan to support the socio-economic reintegration of vulnerable women and girls by strengthening their capacities and providing support for income-generating activities in various vocational trades. The aim is to enable them to become self-reliant, promote their empowerment, increase their economic capacity, and contribute to the fight against poverty.
