Nigeria has one of the world's largest out-of-school populations, driven by poverty and family hardship. After 10 years in Lagos slums, VTS has learned that enrollment alone is not enough. Many vulnerable children return to the streets without ongoing support. Through the VTS Foster Care Project, Voice to the Street provides education, mentoring, counselling, welfare, and family support to help children stay in school and build brighter futures.
Nigeria has about 18.3 million out-of-school children according to UNICEF, with poverty and family instability keeping millions of children from completing their education. In Lagos slum communities, vulnerable children often leave school to survive or are drawn back to street life by bad influences and difficult home conditions. After a decade of working in these communities, VTS has found that education alone is not enough. Children need lasting support to stay in school and succeed.
For over 10 years, VTS has worked with vulnerable children across Lagos, learning that long-term care is the key to educational success. Through the VTS Foster Care Project, we provide a support system that combines school assistance, mentoring, counselling, welfare support, family engagement, and regular monitoring of each child's progress and wellbeing. By helping children overcome daily challenges and negative influences, VTS gives them the stability needed to complete their education.
By helping vulnerable children stay in school and overcome the challenges that push them back to the streets, VTS is building stronger futures for children, families, and communities across Lagos. Through long-term education, mentoring, and family support, children gain the skills and resilience to become productive adults, reducing poverty and dependence on street life.
