We only have a short way to go to meet our funding goal to bring a new solar-powered water station to Benin. And, not only that, we are in the middle of a 60% Renewable Energy matching campaign. That means that between now and May 24th, whatever you contribute will be matched by 60%.
Since we are so close to reaching our goal, we’ve made a promise to the community of Bouka in the Kalalé District of Benin, that they are getting a new water station. Bouka, with a population of 11,030, currently has one water station that takes care of only a quarter of the population. We asked Amidou Mama Sambo who manages ADESCA, our local partner organziation in Benin, how the citizens of Bouka have managed to survive with such a drastic water shortage. Here is an English translation of his French response:
“Water has always been the rarest commodity Bouka. When the single water station breaks down, the entire village sleeps without water. The population of Bouka walks to Marigot (another village) to use that village’s water. Also, the Bouka residents save the runoff from their roofs for cooking and other vital needs, assuming it rains, which doesn’t happen much in the dry season. Now, with the help of the Solar Electric Light Fund’s Global Giving campaign, we will grow to two wells. The flow test has already been done; so, we know the water is waiting for us.“
Please consider making a donation during this 60% match period so that we can deliver clean drinking water to Bouka as soon as possible. We have a lot of excited people hoping and waiting for us to reach our goal. Thank you!
