Project Report | May 26, 2023
Mawas activities update from October to March'23!

By Nico Hermanu | BOSF Fundraising Officer

Introduction

The BOS-US and BOS-UK Reforestation Project activities for the period October 2022 to March 2023 include the following:

  • Construction of a community group nursery
  • Seedling production for 40 ha
  • Community’s capacity building
  • Technical assistance and periodic monitoring of seedling preparation and production
  • Procurement of office and field equipment (1 unit of a wooden boat, 1 set of work gear for field personnel, 1 cellphone, and 1 laptop)

Progress of Project ActivitiesOverview of the Project Progress:

Construction of a community group nursery, 40 ha of seedling production, the development of community capacity, technical support, and recurring monitoring of seedling preparation and production are all included.

Equipment purchases for the office and the field.

Construction of Community Group Nursery

Three community organizations have worked together to build a communal nursery at the Block A building site. Construction details include nurseries built by Eka Kahimat Group measuring 11.8 x 19.3 m accommodating as many as 22 beds, Bahu Himba built two nurseries measuring 8.7 x 11.4 m and 14.5 x 7.45 m with a total of 14 beds overall, and Halajur Mahaga built a nursery measuring 14 x 18.35 m with 33 beds.

Seedling Production for 40 Hectares of Land

The block A work site is where seed production is carried out, which involves several activities such as gathering natural seeds of balangeran and orangutan food tree species, purchasing the Lepironia polybags or locally known as purun, filling them with soil, planting seedlings, and caring for seedlings in the village nursery.

Each group member has an output goal of planting 858 seedlings, which was agreed upon by everybody. For the 40 ha reforestation, all seedlings production activities have been successfully completed, and seedlings’ upkeep is progressing well. Currently, 48,906 seedlings are made available for the project.

Community’s Capacity Building

Through project inception, socialization, refresher training, seed production, and planting activities, community capacity building was carried out. The socialization presentation was held in Mantangai Hulu Village Hall on October 13, 2022. The overall description of the reforestation project, the procedure for implementing the activity, and the creation of a follow-up plan are all explained during the socialization. To create a work agreement with the community engagement group, a meeting was conducted on October 24, 2022.

On November 9, 2022, 17 persons attended a refresher/training session for seed production and planting activities at the Mantangai KPM's Hall and Field. The training materials cover both the theory and practice of putting seed production into practice. The trainers started with how to build the nursery, make the beds, construct the cover, and how to finish building the nursery and selecting the seeds.

Technical Assistance and Periodic Monitoring of Seed Preparation and Production

The BOS Foundation Mawas Program conducted technical assistance and periodic monitoring from November 2022 to February 2023. The purpose of this activity is to monitor the seedling preparation and production so that the process can run according to plan.

The results of assistance and monitoring in February 2023 showed that one technical aspect is in good condition. This aspect is to ensure the plant cover (sungkup) is in  good condition, free from leakage. We then open the cover to allow the seedlings to grow even bigger and start adapting to the environment. We conducted intensive maintenance of the seedlings once the cover was opened.

Technical assistance and periodical monitoring of seedlings production in March 2023 includes:

  1. Assistance for seed production activities after the opening of the cover in February 2023. The maintenance treatment we carried out was a routine inspection and adding compost and water regularly.
  2. We also carefully verified the species and the condition of each seed. We needed to ensure the count of each type of seed and check the seeds’ condition. The data will be collected, written down, distributed to all parties involved, and signed by the members who own the seeds.

The verification process showed that each group has met the quota or target with a total of 48,906 seeds. Details of Balangiran seedlings per group starting from the Bahu Himba, Halajur Mahaga, and Eka Kahimat groups, respectively, were 4,802 seedlings, 7,203 seedlings, and 7,546 seedlings, with a total of 19,551. The following details for orangutan food plants seedlings consisting of Lampuda, Hampuak, Parupuk, Rambangun and Tumih seedlings, per group, respectively, are 7,210 seedlings, 10,815 seedlings and 11,330 seedlings for a total of 29,355 seedlings.

Procurement of Office and Field Equipment

To support the crew carrying out activities in the field, we made some purchases of equipment. We purchased 1 unit of a wooden boat equipped with an engine for transportation; 1 set of work gear consisting of a machete, a pair of shades, gloves, boots, 1 cellphone, and 1 laptop.
