Dear GlobalGiving Donors,
As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on the significant strides SEED has made in growing our "Green Army" of educated, environmentally-conscious individuals. Thanks to your support, we have advanced our mission of empowering communities through practical and sustainable education, particularly in underserved areas.
Key Activities and Highlights
1. Addressing Food Security
In response to the alarming fact that 25% of South Africans live below the Food Poverty Line, SEED's Organic Gardening Design Course has played a crucial role in enhancing local food security. Conducted in November and December, this course enabled the design and setup of vital community gardens at the Florida School of Skills and a clinic in Mitchells Plain, as well as a home garden in a local township. These initiatives provide sustainable food sources and empower community members to cultivate their own nutritious food, directly addressing food insecurity in vulnerable populations.
2. Applied Permaculture Training (APT)
The APT course, a cornerstone of our programming, wrapped up its latest session with 11 graduates. These individuals are now equipped with the skills to implement sustainable agricultural practices in their own communities, thus expanding our "Green Army." Graduates from these courses often return as volunteers or become local advocates for sustainability, embodying the project's goals.
3. Planting the Future
This initiative aligns closely with our mission to foster environmental stewardship. We planted 65 trees at Rocklands Primary School, with students actively participating. This effort not only teaches environmental care but also contributes directly to our goal of increasing urban green spaces.
4. Expanding our Impact at Caradale Primary
By introducing practical science-based lessons to younger students, we're laying the groundwork for a lifelong commitment to environmental education, ensuring that the next generation values and understands their role in sustainable living.
5. Men's Workshop and the Kind Heart Bench
The unveiling of the Kind Heart Bench and the associated men's workshop provided a platform for discussing the role of men in community and environmental care. This initiative is crucial as it encourages inclusive community involvement in our green projects.
6. Alumni and Market Engagement
The success of our Spring Market, featuring alumni businesses, highlights the entrepreneurial spirit fostered through our training. These alumni are tangible proof of the project's success, showcasing how education can transform individuals into contributors to the local green economy.
Gratitude and Conclusion
We are profoundly grateful for your ongoing support, which has been crucial in achieving our goals this year. With your contributions through GlobalGiving, SEED has made considerable impacts in community empowerment and environmental education. Your support helps us continue to grow our "Green Army," making a sustainable difference in the lives of individuals and the broader community. We look forward to sharing more success stories and further achievements as we continue our work.
Warm regards,
The SEED team
