Summary

This appeal is launched by student Peace Fellows from The Advocacy Project in partnership with the Network of Families of the Disappeared Nepal (NEFAD) on behalf of Small World in Nepal. We are shocked by this disaster in a country that we love and where AP students have volunteered since 2003. Our appeal seeks $5,000 and is led by Ruby, 16, in Tennessee. Small World has done heroic relief work since Day 1 and will use donations with great effect. Please watch their powerful videos. Thank you!

Challenge

The dramatic videos from Small World that accompany this appeal show the devastation and suffering caused by the floods - communities swept away, families grieving, homes destroyed and livelihoods ruined. Moreover, the disaster is far from over. There has been new flooding and climate poses a growing threat to this fragile region. Affected families urgently need support to rebuild their lives. But we also need to remind the world of the danger that faces us all from climate change - and act.

Solution

We hope to raise $5,000 to support Small World, which has helped over 4,000 flood-affected families so far and has deep roots in these mountain communities. Our appeal is also backed by friends from NEFAD, who themselves lost family members during the conflict in Nepal and know what it to grieve for lost loved ones. Donors who give more that $50 will receive a festival tea towel made from images hand-embroidered by NEFAD members. Ruby, our appeal coordinator is seen in the photo with a towel.

Long-Term Impact

After an incredibly challenging emergency, described through the videos, Small World is now turning to long-term rehabilitation with a special focus on children. Our appeal aims to help families rebuild and find shelter while also raising awareness of the long-term threat to our planet from climate change and its link to natural disasters. There is so much we can do to encourage greater preparedness. Climate resiliency must start with local communities and organizations like Small World.
