Almost daily Warrick County Animal Control gets animals into their facility. Many are in need of minor preventive medications such as flea meds or dewormer. However, multiple times a year a few animals will enter in dire need of emergency medical care that can often times reach hundreds to thousands of dollars. As many of you know the animal control facility doesn’t even have a food or litter budget much less one to help animals in need of veterinary attention.
Two such dogs, Hippo and Petal recently found themselves in need of some major medical care. Each case was well over the hundreds anticipated and Hippos was into the thousands. Everyday we try to raise funds to cover the cost of treating these dogs, as we cannot recoup the cost into an adoption fee. It is our choice to save these dogs and could easily euthanize them but choose not to do that. With the help of GlobalGiving donors we have been able to save more animals each year with the contributions coming into Warrick Animal Guardians!
Hippo a beautiful and tolerate Pit bull was found as a stray. She was having trouble walking and it looked like she had been drug behind a vehicle...wearing and breaking her toenails off. Many were completely gone and infection had set in causing her much pain and discomfort. She would need hospitalization to be kept in a clean and dry environment, pain medications, antibiotics, and radiographs. Not to mention she was flea infested, not spayed and had double ear infections.
Petal was also found as a stray. The person that found her fed her but she couldn't keep it down, so she contacted the animal control facility. After her arrival it was determined she most likely had parvo and would also need immediate hospitalization, IV fluids, anti-vomiting and anti-diarrhea drugs, pain meds, and antibiotics.
Both dogs could have been euthanized immediately, but thanks to caring individuals and the commitment by WAG together we were able to save them both. Both dogs went to a local rescue and Petal has already found her new home. Hopefully Hippo will find hers soon too!
