KITTENS APLENTY!

By Danielle Barnes | Project Leader

Babies without a momma

Most counties have a surplus of cats and are forced to make tough decisions routinely by euthanizing or disregarding their suffering.  Rescues and shelters help by taking in some of these cats but can only take so many.  Sadly, this is common and each month we see dozens to hundreds of felines.  During the summer months of June, July and August those numbers can double to triple.  It puts a huge strain on the already overworked facilities and pushes the space constraints to the limits.  It can be frustrating to have dozens of cats and kittens entering your facility daily and have nowhere for them to go.   Without adoptions, fosters or support from monetary donations to pay for all that they require, many organizations just can’t keep up.

Spay and neuter is key to helping end the cat/kitten over populations.  Educating people that ONLY feed stray cats is still part of the problem.  Offering reduced cost to get these cats altered before they have litters is one of the easiest ways to help our communities.  Especially because cats are 45 times as prolific as humans. They need our help to reduce their numbers until we can find homes for all of them.

Warrick Animal Guardians is one of the only organizations in the area that offers half off and free vouchers to the public to get their cats altered.  We believe it is the smart thing to do to help reduce the overload of cats entering our facilities. It quite literally helps save hundreds of lives by not letting the cats reproduce...this means less births, less animals in animal controls and rescues and gives the ones already born the possibility of finding a home.

All of the cats and kittens pictured (many more not part of this story) entered our small local animal control facility in a span of one month and this was only early May.

Warrick Animal Guardians will pull as many mommas, kittens or special needs as they have willing foster homes.  Each one of these felines requires food, litter, supplies to house and of course cleaning supplies.  Medically each momma cat gets Felv/FIV tested, vaccinated, dewormed and flea treatments.  As the kittens grow, they will also get multiple vaccinations, deworming’s, and flea treatments.   Once momma cat and kittens are ready, they will be spayed and neutered.   The average cost for an adult female cat in our care for 2 months is about $200.  The kitten’s average cost is slightly more, due to the number of repeated medications, at about $250. These pets are then adopted out for $95, a huge loss for a nonprofit.  This is a great example of how donations make all the difference in saving lives.

Every one of the cats and kittens pictured where saved.  Almost all have already been adopted except the Grey cat with her babies.  They are still growing in a safe, loving, foster home!
