One Heart World-Wide and the Tarahumara people are very grateful for your generation contributions. With your help we were able to surpass our fundraising goal! As a result, we were able to purchase, prepare and distribute food packages for 542 families that either have a pregnant woman or nursing mother. With food packages designed to sustain a typical family for a month made up of familiar, staple items of the Tarahumara diet, we were able to help these families survive the food-shortage brought on by the two-year drought and unusually low temperatures in the region.
With the food crisis addressed, we hope that you continue to support One Heart World-Wide in serving the Tarahumara people. Specifically, we need your help to bring better maternal care to adolescent Tarahumaras. Given their geographical and cultural isolation, young women lack access to adequate health care and education. We hope to train and equip more volunteers, our Foot Soldiers of Change, to reach out to the adolescent population. They will be able to inform them of their options for accessing care, accompany them to clinics, and provide young women with vitamins and prenatal care and education - empowering them to take charge of their maternal health and to raise healthier families. These young women can then go on to educate their peers by sharing messages on safe pregnancy and childbirth, creating future generations of women who are better informed about pregnancy-related issues that affect their communities at-large and thus greatly reducing preventable maternal and neonatal deaths.
