Thanks to your generous contributions, One Heart World-Wide has been able to aid the Tarahumara people in our program areas!  Over 500 families were given the supplies necessary to survive the food-shortage caused by the two-year drought and unusually low temperatures.

The food packages distributed to combat these conditions were designed to sustain a typical Tarahumara family for a month. They included items that were what they would regularly see on their own table: corn, rice, beans, milk, cooking oil, noodle soup, sugar, corn dough, salt, coffee, etc.  Two municipal clinics were used as distribution points, one being the clinic in Urique, which sits at the bottom of Copper Canyon.  The second clinic in Cerocahui is farther, sitting about halfway up the canyon from Urique.  Transportation and storage of the food was in part provided by the State.

The transportation of the food became the most time-consuming part of the job, due to the difficulty of access to roads in the region.  After the food was delivered to the central locations and the packages were made, the only two available pickup trucks transported the food as far as the roads go, at which point the packages were carried by foot.  One Heart's Foot Soldiers of Change, who are local volunteers, walked for hours to reach the communities to distribute the food. For the people that live near the clinics, stations were made for local pick up as well. Thanks to funding from people like you and the hard work of our Foot Soldiers, we were able to reach many families who have been affected by the extended drought and resulting food-shortage that the people of the Copper Canyon have endured during recent months.

We and the Tarahumara thank you for your support during this time of crisis. Here are just a few of the people that donations helped:
