As of June 14, 2012, GlobalGiving donors have contributed $1,080 of the $15,005 that One Heart Worldwide has raised towards combating the food shortage in the Copper Canyon that is affecting families of the Tarahumara. A two-year long drought has left the Tarahumara in a state of emergency, and relief efforts are aimed at preventing the malnutrition of mothers and newborns in the region.
One Heart World-Wide has partnered with Disconsa S.A. in order to purchase food supplies that will be distributed to over 500 families. These food packages contain local cooking staples such as corn, rice, beans, milk, cooking oil, noodle soup, sugar, corn dough, salt, and coffee. Now that the food has been purchased, the next step in the project is the distribution phase.
While One Heart World-Wide is eager to begin this phase of the project, the intensive distribution process requires the combined effort of many volunteers, some of which are currently involved in one of our regularly scheduled training programs regarding emergency obstetrics. Furthermore, the Tarahumara reside in some of the most isolated regions of Chihuahua, so the transportation of large quantities of food is very difficult to arrange. Two available pickup trucks will transport volunteers as far as road construction permits, after which point volunteers will have to carry the food packages by foot in order to reach the communities where the food needs to be distributed. More updates regarding food distribution will be provided as the delivery of food packages progresses.
