Yep, we ran the numbers recently, we’ve delivered half a million pounds (200 metric tons) of food in the last 6 months. And for the record, we’re not a factory, or a transport company, or a supermarket. Or at least, we didn’t plan to be, but these days we certainly could be mistaken for any one of those…
The objective of Katalyst Kitchens was to develop and diversify the food sector in Moldova. We noticed big investments were made around here to create hubs for software developers, engineers, artists and other “white collar” professions. The reality is that Moldova has a strong agriculture legacy, yet these days almost all food exports are in the form of raw materials, which account for at most, 10% of the price of whatever you buy in a restaurant or supermarket. Meaning, the hard work happens here, not the profits.
We were never so ambitious to believe we could reorient the food system of Moldova, more like adding drops to a bucket by creating a place to learn, pilot test recipes, scale up to find a process that’s not too labor intensive, then get and hold the attention of your clients while hopefully paying the bills.
We barely starting working in this direction when the Ukraine Crisis came knocking on our door. And we jumped to answer the call.
And as it turns out, we may have “katalyzed” a bigger shift in the local humanitarian response than we could have imagined contributing to the food industry.
That’s because, from the start, we approached the problem of “hungry refugees” differently than others. And over the last half year, some of the big players have taken note by either asking us how they can do better, or adopting practices that appear suspiciously similar to ours.
From the first day, our priorities were:
Vitamins over calories
Local over imported
Fresh over packaged
Hand-made over industrial
Biodegradable not boxes
Clients not recipients
Engage not just serve
And when you bundle that all up, you get a more sustainable approach to humanitarian aid, in our opinion.
