Celebrating 50 Million Meals Provided So Far

By Adam Lowy | Founder & Executive Director

Since the founding of our organization, Move For Hunger has officially delivered 50 million meals to people experiencing hunger across North America! As a national nonprofit dedicated to fighting food insecurity and reducing food waste, this is not just a number—it’s a goal we’ve been climbing towards faster and faster each year.

This accomplishment underscores our commitment to hunger relief over the last 15 years while highlighting the growing need for food assistance. And while we’re proud of this achievement, it would take 51 billion meals to feed every American facing hunger for a year - a sobering reminder of the work still ahead.

Right now, 47 million Americans, including 1 in 5 children, are living with food insecurity, meaning they can’t always guarantee where their next meal is coming from. Rising living costs, USDA cuts to food banks and school meals, and the threat of reduced funding to programs such as SNAP are only making things worse.

Food banks are stretched thin. Families are faced with impossible choices. Millions of pounds of food are needlessly thrown out every year. And that’s exactly why Move For Hunger exists.

Earlier this year, a giant food company in California called us about 56,000 fruit cups approaching their “Best By” date. We had two options: Recover the food or let them throw it in the trash. Often times, a fruit cup can last more than 6 months past a best by date – even though they can no longer be sold in a grocery store.  Fortunately, our team sprang into action and orchestrated the recovery efforts and delivered it to a local food bank.

It cost Move For Hunger $500 to recover this load that would have otherwise been destined for landfills. Tractor trailer loads of food are going to waste each and every day. Because of supporters like you, Move For Hunger is here to stop the waste.

Help us say yes to more food recovery calls like this one by donating today.
