Harvesting Hope: Giving Thanks & Giving Back in 2023

By Adam Lowy | Founder & Executive Director

This year, Move For Hunger has a lot to be thankful for. We’ve had our most impactful year yet, having helped transport more than 7 million pounds of food across the US and Canada in 2023 alone, surpassing our 2022 record of 5.5 million pounds. And the year’s not over yet! We’re so grateful for your support!

Topple Hunger: Shattering A Guinness World Records™

On October 12, 2023, With 12,952 cereal boxes officially toppled at the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center, Move For Hunger shattered the previous record of 6,391 boxes.

After the successful topple, all the cereal and milk used were delivered to Forgotten Harvest and Gleaners Community Food Bank in Michigan, ensuring that the food doesn't go to waste and reaches those who need it most.

The impact of this event went beyond just breaking a record. By providing 500,000 meals to communities in need, it made a tangible difference in the lives of countless individuals and families. This record-breaking spectacle was not just about entertainment; it was about making a meaningful contribution to our community.

Fresh Food

From launching in October of 2021 to now, our Fresh Food Program has continued to expand its reach coast to coast. In just the first few months of the program launch, Move For Hunger delivered over 700,000 pounds of fresh food in collaboration with our network. In 2022, our network helped us deliver over 1.8 million pounds to the communities who needed it most.
From working with local agencies in Providence, Rhode Island to provide cold storage for freshly caught fish, to partnering with farms across the nation to offer temporary cold storage solutions, to working hand-in-hand with organizations like Society of St. Andrew and America’s Grow-a-Row to collect the food in the field and organize the transportation, the Move For Hunger network has been working hard to ensure no produce was left behind.

Many assume that with colder weather comes less crops to harvest - but they couldn’t be more wrong. Late September to early December is one of the busiest seasons for many farmers! Since most crops are planted in the spring season and allowed to grow during the summer months, autumn is the time when crops are finally ready to be harvested. So far this fall, our network has worked hard to provide more than 530,000 lbs. of fresh food donations to communities in need across the nation.

Fight Hunger This Holiday Season

According to Feeding America, (based on the USDA’s annual Household Food Insecurity in the United States report) a staggering 44 million Americans (previously 34 million) are food insecure, including 13 million children.

There’s still time to make an impact in the fight to end hunger this holiday season. Your past support has helped us feed more people and keep more food out of landfills. Join us for a Season of Giving Food Drive or Fundraiser or consider making another donation – every $25 helps us deliver 63 meals to people who are facing hunger this holiday season.
