Help Us End Child Marriage in Mexico

In the Remote Mountains, a Girl's Future Shouldn't Be for Sale

In the rugged mountains of Guerrero, one of Mexico's poorest states, lies the municipality of Metlatonoc—a place where extreme poverty isn't just a statistic, but a daily reality that steals childhoods. Here, among indigenous communities struggling to survive, child marriage rates soar among the highest in the country. For girls born in these mountains, the path ahead is tragically predetermined.

More Than Poverty: A Culture of Limitation

This economic desperation is compounded by deeply entrenched gender norms that have defined girls' and women's roles for generations. From birth, girls are taught that their value lies in their ability to care for others—to cook, to clean, to bear children, to serve. Their own dreams, their own bodies, their own futures are not their own to decide.

In these communities, a girl's education is often seen as unnecessary. These beliefs, passed down through generations, create a self-perpetuating cycle where girls never learn they have the right to choose.

Without education, without job opportunities, without financial security or economic independence, girls and women remain trapped. They cannot leave abusive marriages because they have nowhere to go and no way to support themselves. They cannot protect their own daughters from the same fate because they lack the power, resources, and knowledge to do otherwise. This is the perfect storm that fuels domestic abuse, exploitation, and the trafficking of children for marriage.

More than 10 Years of Breaking Chains

For more than ten years, our program—"Help Them Not to Reach the Altar"—has been dismantling these cycles of poverty and oppression, one community at a time. We don't just tell families that child marriage is wrong; we show them a different path forward.

In 12 communities across La Montaña, we've worked alongside local leaders, families, and most importantly, the girls themselves. We teach them about human rights—not as abstract concepts, but as tools they can use to defend their dignity, their bodies, and their futures. We help communities understand that a girl's education is not a waste, but an investment that lifts entire families out of poverty.

With your support, we will:

  • Expand our strengthened program to more localities in the region, ensuring no girl is left behind
  • Train more community leaders to become advocates for girls' rights within their own villages
  • Strengthen our educational programs, keeping girls in school and showing families the tangible benefits of education
  • Build sustainable support networks so that girls who resist marriage have safe alternatives and ongoing support

Your donation doesn't just save one girl from marriage—it changes entire communities. It breaks generational cycles of poverty and violence that have trapped families for centuries. It proves to fathers that daughters are assets, not burdens. It shows mothers that they have power. It teaches girls that their voices matter.

The results speak for themselves: 7,000 girls are now protected from being sold into marriage. 12 communities have signed formal local agreements to prohibit and eradicate the sale of girls and adolescents, within the context of forced marriage. 15 additional communities in the region are waiting now to receive our integral community program.

To truly end child marriage, we must address its root cause: poverty.
